Review: Haochi at Sun N Sand

We recently visited the much talked about Chinese restaurant at Sun N Sand, Mumbai - Haochi. Run by celebrity chef Gautam Mehrishi, this one exceeded our expectations! Everything we had here was amazing, no wonder the restaurant was pack at lunch hour on a weekday.

Here's a glimpse of our meal!

Bombay Fizz

Great Wall Martini

The drinks were impressive. Bombay Fizz was extremely stiff and one drink could be good enough to get you in high spirits. The Great Wall Martini is a fusion of gin, pineapple and passion fruit, tangy and delicious. They don't disappoint the teetotalers either. Look at the fancy presentation of a non-alcoholic beverage!
Char Siu Bao

Crispy Peking Duck served with Hoi Sin sauce and Julienned Greens
Soba Noodles
The appetizers at Haochi are absolutely delicious. The Char Siu Bao or the pork buns melted in the mouth. The Crispy Peking Duck went well with the Hoi Sin sauce. Also, one of the must try dishes at Haochi is the Lotus Root, vegetarians, you will love this! The Soba noodles and Buttery rice pairs up excellently with most of the mains.

Chocolate Lava Cake

Mandarin Orange Infused Creme Brulee

Almond Yogurt
The exciting range of desserts were something that we left enough space for. The Chocolate Lava Cake, emmm, sinful, an overdose of chocolate. The crackling Creme Brulee with Mandarin orange infused was fruity and refreshing. The Almond Yogurt on the other hand was light and a perfect way to end the meal!

Overall, Haochi lives up to the meaning of its name - Simply Delicious! We totally recommend this one!

Review: Singkong

When we heard that one of our favourite restaurants The Tasty Tangles had been replaced by a brand new Pan Asian eatery, we were both, disappointed and inquisitive.
Singkong, the latest addition to Bandra's food scene, in one word is 'delightful'! A live sushi counter, a bar and dim lighting are the key features of the ambience. The look and feel of the place is much similar to The Tasty Tangles, which in a way is a good thing.

Browsing through the menu, we realized that the place is priced not as steep as The Tasty Tangles or Sanchos and comprises of Thai, Japanese and Chinese dishes. They also have an extensive bar menu with some unique blends.

We ordered our drinks after scanning through the bar menu, the Tropical Sangria and the Singkong Martini caught our attention. While the Sangria was quite a disappointment, the signature martini was delicious and got better with every sip. The coffee flavour along with the punch of vodka and cinnamon blended perfectly and left us craving for more.

Coming to the food, we were served tasting portions of a lot of dishes out of which our favourites were the following. Roasted Black Pepper Chicken, succulent and flavourful; Oriental Shrimp Nest, served in a shot glass and was definitely a winner, Spicy Aromatic Chicken Dumpling, a signature dish and comprised of a riot of flavours. A special mention to the sushi, even though we are not fans of sushi in general, we thoroughly enjoyed and savoured the ones served here. The chef has done an incredible job of tweaking the flavours for the Indian taste buds.

For desserts we tried the Sesame Honey Mini Cones which transported us back to being kids and the Chocolate Mocha Fudge Cake, dense and sinful.
Overall, Singkong is an ideal destination for lunch and dinner meetings or family get togethers. lovely flavours and spacious seating, give it a miss if you are planning a quiet date!

Review: The Tasty Tangles

Jumeirah Restaurants in collaboration with Dish Hospitality has launched a brand new oriental restaurant, The Tasty Tangles in Khar. The restaurant has two successful outlets in Bangalore and Delhi and I was hoping that this one is equally good in terms of food, service and ambience.

Located right above the Mexican newbie Sanchos, a broad staircase led us to the entrance of The Tasty Tangles. As we entered, the polite staff directed us to a table where the menu cards were placed in a wooden holder along with distinctive spiral pens. The server informed us that to place the order all we had to do is tick the items we would like to have. Interesting huh?

The restaurant is spread across 2,900 sq feet and can accommodate around 80-90 people. There are tables for two, four and six and a live kitchen where you can see your food being prepared right in front of your eyes. There is a glass wall facing the road but incase you don't wish to admire the traffic of Mumbai, you can opt for the tables on the inside.

Coming to the menu, there were limited items on the menu with barely anything for vegetarians which was quite disappointing. The menu was squeezed into one page with starters, noodles/rice, specialities, mains and desserts. There was a seperate liquor menu as well. The staff gave us our space and time to decide and wasn't standing on our head all the while. After a lot of discussion we decided to call for the Kung Pao Chicken with Egg Noodles. The server informed us that the noodles didn't require an accompaniment and they were willing to alter the dish according to our requirement. The food took approximately ten minutes to arrive. The staff expected us to serve the food to our plates ourselves which was really unexpected. The noodles had a strange aftertaste which we didn't quite enjoy. There were big pieces of chicken, however we would've preferred them to be a little more cooked. Also, the portion sizes could have been much better.

Overall, the ambience and service were impeccable but the quality of food and portion sizes have scope for improvement.
